10 Most Beautiful Places in China for First-Time Travelers

China’s 10 Most Beautiful Destinations for First-Time Visitors

If you love spectacular natural scenery, this list is for you. We’ve carefully selected some of China’s most breathtaking natural destinations, from mountains and lakes to grasslands, and included practical tips to help make your trip smoother and more rewarding.

1.Kalajun Grassland

Kalajun Grassland may not be as well known as Nalati or Hulunbuir Grassland, but after experiencing it for myself, I can confidently say that it is one of the most breathtaking grasslands in China.

Unlike some more commercialized attractions, Kalajun Grassland has retained its natural simplicity and unspoiled beauty.

Here, you’ll see vast grasslands, dense forests and snow-capped mountains coming together in a stunning landscape of layered scenery. The panoramic views are incredible, and with relatively few visitors, you can enjoy a quieter, more immersive experience.

The grassland is vast, so we recommend setting aside at least a full day to explore. The best time to visit is from May to June, when the grass is lush, wildflowers are in bloom, and snow can still be seen on the mountain peaks. It is also a quieter time before the peak tourist season begins.

There are two must-see viewpoints: Flower Platform (Xianhuatai) and Falcon Platform (Lieyingtai). Flower Platform offers wide-open views of the surrounding landscape, while Falcon Platform has more dramatic terrain and is also better for photography.

If you’d like to go horseback riding, Falcon Platform is the recommended place. It is an officially managed riding area, offering beautiful scenery and a safer riding experience.

If you enjoy hiking, consider walking from Flower Platform to Falcon Platform instead of taking the sightseeing shuttle. This hike takes about an hour and offers some of the most beautiful views in the entire Kalajun Scenic Area. Along the way, you can fully enjoy the vast natural landscape and peaceful atmosphere.

2.Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou is famous for its colorful lakes and expansive mountain forests. The colors of the lakes change with the light throughout the day and with the seasons. Few places in China can match the beauty of its waters.

Autumn is the most beautiful season to visit Jiuzhaigou, especially from October 20 to November 10, when the entire valley seems to be painted in brilliant shades of red and gold.

This is also the busiest time of year. If you’d like to enjoy the autumn colors while avoiding some of the crowds, consider visiting from October 7 to 10 or November 1 to 10.

Jiuzhaigou is very large, so if you enjoy photography, we recommend setting aside at least a full day to explore. An ideal plan is to arrive the night before and stay near the scenic area, allowing you to enter early the next morning and make the most of your visit.

Jiuzhaigou has three main valleys, but the two most worth exploring are Rize Valley and Shuzheng Valley. Rize Valley is home to some stunning lakes, while Shuzheng Valley is known for its colorful forests and beautiful waterscapes.

3.Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)

Huangshan may be one of the places in China that most closely resembles a traditional Chinese ink painting, offering a vivid experience of classical Chinese landscape beauty. The “Four Wonders” of Huangshan are its sea of clouds, uniquely shaped pine trees, unusual rock formations and hot springs.

Xihai Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular areas of Huangshan. Here, you can admire steep cliffs, mist-covered pine forests and sweeping views of the sea of clouds. If you’re physically fit, consider hiking to Bright Summit, one of Huangshan’s higher peaks. It is also an excellent place to watch the sunrise or sunset.

We recommend spending 2–3 days exploring Huangshan and strongly suggest staying one night on the mountain. For a more relaxed visit, you can take the cable car and enjoy shorter walks. This option is suitable for families with children and older travelers who are in good health, including those over 70.

If you’re active and enjoy hiking, you can also trek the full route, which takes about four full days.

Beyond the mountain scenery, the ancient villages at the foot of Huangshan are equally charming, with their classic white walls and gray-tiled roofs. Hongcun is the most famous village. If you visit in March or April, you can also see canola flowers blooming in the fields around the village.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more immersive rural experience, I recommend Bishan Village, about a 1.5-hour drive from Huangshan. It feels like a rural paradise. You can read in a peaceful bookstore, enjoy a drink at a bar tucked among the village lanes, or simply wander through the old streets and traditional architecture.

4.Sayram Lake

Sayram Lake is often considered one of the most beautiful lakes in China. Its greatest charm lies in its crystal-clear blue water: the bluer the sky, the deeper the lake’s color appears.

Snow-capped mountains rise in the distance, while lush grasslands stretch along the shore. The scenery is so peaceful that it feels as though the lake can wash away your worries, leaving you with a sense of calm and relaxation.

The best way to explore Sayram Lake is by self-driving or hiring a car. This allows you to stop whenever you like to admire the views and take photos at your own pace.

If you have enough time, we highly recommend spending a full day driving around the lake. Every stretch of the route offers different scenery, making the journey varied and enjoyable.

If your time is limited, you can choose the stretch between the South Gate and North Gate. This area includes some of the lake’s most scenic views and is a good option for a shorter visit.

The best time to visit is from June to August, when wildflowers bloom across the grasslands beside the lake. Another magical season is December to January, when beautiful blue ice may appear on the lake’s surface. If you’re lucky, you may even see a pink sunset—a special winter sight at Sayram Lake.

5.Li River

If you want to experience China’s beautiful mountain-and-river countryside, the Li River is well worth a visit. Flowing from Guilin to Yangshuo, the river is lined with towering karst peaks that rise from the earth like bamboo shoots after rain.

The clear water reflects the dramatic mountains, while fishing boats drift along the river and patches of farmland add to the peaceful rural charm.

The most relaxing way to experience the Li River is by taking a river cruise. The full journey takes around four hours, and the stretch from Nine Horses Fresco Hill (Jiuma Huashan) to Xingping Ancient Town is particularly scenic.

The best time to visit is from September to October, when the weather is sunny and dry and golden rice fields make the landscape even more beautiful.

March to April is another good time to visit. The karst peaks are often shrouded in mist, creating a dreamlike scene that feels like stepping into a traditional Chinese ink painting.

After arriving in Yangshuo, it’s worth staying an extra day or two. You can go caving, kayaking, cycling or rock climbing, or simply relax at a riverside resort and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

6.Tiger Leaping Gorge

If you love outdoor activities or are looking for a truly awe-inspiring natural experience, Tiger Leaping Gorge is not to be missed. It is one of the deepest gorges in the world. The mighty Jinsha River cuts through towering cliffs, with snow-capped peaks rising more than 3,000 meters on either side.

Whether you’re standing on a viewing platform or hiking along a narrow trail, the sound of the roaring river, the snow-capped mountains ahead and the rushing water below will make you feel both the immense power of nature and a deep sense of personal strength.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is divided into three sections: Upper, Middle and Lower Gorge. Most visitors choose the Upper Gorge, where the trails and viewpoints are more developed. If you’re up for a more challenging route, the Middle Gorge offers one of China’s most breathtaking hiking experiences.

The best times to visit are from April to June and from September to October, when the weather is generally comfortable and the river flow is suitable for exploring.

You can visit Tiger Leaping Gorge in half a day to a full day. If you plan to complete the full hike, allow two days and spend one night at a local guesthouse inside the gorge.

7.Longji Rice Terraces

The layers of Longji Rice Terraces ripple across the mountains like waves, attracting photography lovers from around the world. The terraces are especially beautiful during the harvest season from September to October, when the fields turn golden and offer some of the most stunning views of the year.

On one side, you’ll see old wooden houses; on the other, terraced fields winding down the hillsides. Local residents work in the fields wearing traditional ethnic clothing. This living cultural landscape is something few other scenic areas can match.

For a relaxed way to enjoy the views, you can take the cable car to a high viewpoint. But if you’re feeling active, we recommend walking into the terraces instead.

Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with ever-changing views and may meet friendly local residents. You might even have the opportunity to visit a local home and learn about the distinctive customs of ethnic minority communities.

We recommend spending at least a full day here. If you’d like a slower, more immersive experience, consider staying overnight in one of the hilltop villages and enjoying sunrise over the terraces.

8.Zhangye Rainbow Mountains

If you enjoy striking, surreal geological landscapes, the Zhangye Danxia Landform is a must-see. Its most breathtaking feature is the colorful hills, where layers of red, yellow, orange and gray rock resemble a giant painter’s palette.

Under the sunlight, the colors appear vivid and clearly defined, like a natural oil painting that leaves you in awe at first sight. This kind of landscape is rarely found elsewhere.

The best time to visit is around sunset. The low-angle sunlight casts dramatic shadows and enriches the colors of the rock layers, making it ideal for photography and for appreciating nature’s artistry.

The best season for viewing is from June to September, when the weather is generally dry and the colors are at their most vibrant.

Plan to spend about half a day here. There are several viewing platforms, and it’s best to enter in the late afternoon. Follow the route from the higher platforms down to the lower ones, ending your visit with a spectacular sunset.

Zhangye is about a two-hour high-speed train ride from Xining and a four-hour high-speed train ride from Dunhuang, making it a convenient stop on a Silk Road journey. You can also explore our Xi’an tour itinerary for travel inspiration.

9.Changbai Mountain

If you want to experience China’s pristine, spectacular snowy landscapes, Changbai Mountain in winter is not to be missed. The mountain is covered in thick white snow, and Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) may freeze over, creating a mirror-like surface.

You can wander through snow-covered forests, soak in steaming hot springs, and may even spot a sika deer.

The best time to enjoy snowy scenery and hot springs is from December to February. If you hope to see Heavenly Lake in its entirety, consider visiting from July to September, when the weather is usually clearer.

We recommend spending 1–2 days here. If you only have one day, focus on the North Slope, which offers more attractions and easier access. If you have two days, add the West Slope for different views of Heavenly Lake. You can also visit Wanda International Resort for a skiing experience.

10.Ejina Desert Poplar Forest

If you want to experience some of China’s most golden and dreamlike autumn colors, don’t miss the poplar forests of Ejina.

For a short period each year, usually from early to mid-October, the vast desert poplars turn from green to shimmering gold.

Sunlight filters through the leaves, with blue skies and desert landscapes in the background, creating a scene that feels almost unreal.

Located in northwestern Inner Mongolia, near the edge of the desert, Ejina offers more than golden poplar trees. You can also experience the vast beauty of the Gobi, rolling sand dunes and ancient ruins. These landscapes create a striking contrast with the vibrant poplar forest, making the scenery truly distinctive.

The best time to visit is from October 7 to 14, when the colors of the poplar forest are usually at their peak. The forest area is quite large, so we recommend spending two days to explore it fully. You can also include the nearby Heicheng Ruins and the mysterious “Strange Poplar Forest” (Guaishu Lin) in your itinerary.
