15 Questions to Know Before Traveling the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop

Whether you search for the “Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop,” “Gansu–Qinghai Grand Loop,” or “Northwest China Grand Loop,” in most cases, these names refer to the same classic circular route. The names are different, but the route is generally the same.

So, if you come across these three names while searching for travel guides, there is usually no need to worry. A classic route typically includes:

Xining → Qinghai Lake → Chaka Salt Lake → Delingha → Dachaidan Emerald Lake → Nanbaxian Yadan Landform → Qarhan Salt Lake → U-shaped Highway → Water Yadan → Aksay→ Guazhou’s “Son of the Earth” → Dunhuang→ Jiayuguan → Zhangye Danxia → Qilian Grassland → Menyuan → Xining

How Many Days Should You Plan?

There are countless itineraries online. Some people say 7 days is enough, while others recommend at least 9 days. Some say Chaka Salt Lake is a must-see, while others find Emerald Lake more impressive. Some travelers worry about altitude sickness, while others say there is nothing to worry about. Others are unsure whether to travel independently, drive themselves, hire a private car, or join a small group.

In reality, there is no single standard answer because everyone’s travel dates, budget, companions, and preferred travel style are different.

Based on our experience arranging trips for families, families with children, photography enthusiasts, and overseas Chinese travelers, these are the 15 questions we are asked most frequently when people plan their first Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop trip.

Let’s answer them one by one. After reading this guide, you should have a much clearer understanding of the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop.

1. For a First Trip, Should I Choose 7, 8, or 9 Days?

If your schedule allows, 8 or 9 days is more comfortable. Seven days is enough to complete the main loop, but the daily driving time will be relatively long.

If you want to:
  • Spend less time on the road
  • Have more time for photography
  • Watch sunsets and sunrises
  • Avoid getting up early every day to catch the next departure

we recommend choosing 8 days or more.

For families, travelers with children, and those traveling with parents, a slower pace is especially recommended.

2. Is the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop Very Tiring?

Many travelers come back with the same comment:

“It’s not the scenery that’s tiring — it’s sitting in the car.”

The biggest feature of the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop is the long distance between attractions.

Some tour groups may cover 500–700 km in a single day. A truly comfortable way to travel is not to check off a dozen attractions every day, but to:

  • Spend less time rushing between destinations
  • Stay longer at each attraction
  • Check into your hotel earlier

This can make a huge difference to the overall experience.

3. When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop offers different scenery throughout the year, but most travelers choose to visit between June and October.

June: Early Summer — Snow-Capped Mountains and Flower Fields

✔ Menyuan’s rapeseed flowers gradually begin to bloom, with flowering times varying at different elevations
✔ Snow remains on the Qilian Mountains, creating spectacular mountain scenery
✔ Grasslands begin turning green, while visitor numbers are relatively low
✔ Cool weather makes it comfortable for first-time visitors

Best for: Travelers who enjoy snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and a relatively peaceful travel environment.

July–August: The Classic Travel Season

✔ Grasslands are lush and green
✔ Qinghai Lake, Emerald Lake, and Water Yadan are known for their beautiful colors during this period
✔ Rapeseed flowers reach their peak blooming period, making this an excellent time for photography
✔ Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain, Zhangye Danxia, and other attractions are in their prime sightseeing season
✔ This is also the busiest and liveliest period on the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop

Best for: First-time visitors to Northwest China, families with children, photography enthusiasts, and travelers who want to experience the region’s classic scenery in one trip.

September: A Favorite Season for Many Photographers

✔ Cooler and more comfortable weather
✔ Fewer visitors after the summer vacation period
✔ Softer light creates more depth in photographs
✔ Grasslands gradually change from green to golden yellow, creating richer colors
✔ Hotel prices and crowd levels are generally more favorable than during the summer peak season

Best for: Travelers who prefer a slower pace, photography, and fewer crowds.

October: Deepening Autumn Colors

✔ Some areas enter their golden autumn season
✔ The Qilian Mountains, Menyuan, and surrounding areas develop richer seasonal colors
✔ Clear weather and dry air often provide excellent visibility
✔ Suitable for travelers who enjoy autumn scenery and road trips

However, as temperatures fall at higher elevations, the temperature difference between day and night becomes more significant. Some high-altitude sections may experience snowfall, so check the weather and road conditions before departure.

November to March: Winter — An Underrated Season in Northwest China

Many people believe that winter is not a good time to visit Qinghai and Gansu. In recent years, however, more travelers have been visiting specifically to experience the winter scenery.

✔ The snow-covered peaks of the Qilian Mountains become even more spectacular
✔ Mingsha Mountain and snow can create the rare sight of “desert meets snow,” depending on weather conditions
✔ Snow-covered Zhangye Danxia can create a stronger contrast between the different colors
✔ Visitor numbers are very low, making many attractions quieter and more enjoyable for photography
✔ Hotels and flights are often considerably cheaper than during the peak season

Of course, there are several things to keep in mind during winter:

Some high-altitude areas can reach temperatures of -10°C to below -20°C, so proper warm clothing is essential.

Some scenic areas may temporarily close or adjust their opening hours because of weather conditions. Check before departure.

Snow and ice may occur on roads in winter. Self-driving requires considerable winter driving experience, so hiring an experienced local driver is generally recommended.

Best for: Travelers who enjoy snow scenery, photography, fewer crowds, and a different side of Northwest China.

4. Will I Experience Altitude Sickness?

Most people do not experience severe altitude sickness. Much of the route is around 2,500–3,200 meters above sea level, with only a few locations approaching 3,500 meters.

In general:

✔ Avoid strenuous exercise on your first day
✔ Drink plenty of water
✔ Get enough sleep

These basic measures can help your body adjust.

5. Should I Bring Oxygen?

Under normal circumstances, there is no need to buy large quantities of oxygen bottles in advance.

If you are older, particularly concerned about altitude, or have experienced altitude sickness before, you can bring one bottle as a backup.

The most important thing is to avoid overexerting yourself on the first day.

6. Should I Travel Independently or Hire a Private Car?

For groups of 2–8 people, private-car travel is becoming increasingly popular.

The reasons are simple:

✔ Flexible schedule
✔ Stop whenever you want for photos
✔ No forced shopping stops
✔ No need to follow a fixed group schedule

This can be especially comfortable for photographers, families, and groups of friends.

7. Do I Need to Complete the Entire Grand Loop on My First Trip?

Yes, if your schedule allows.

The classic attractions are connected along the same route, including:

  • Qinghai Lake
  • Chaka Salt Lake
  • Emerald Lake
  • Water Yadan
  • Dunhuang
  • Zhangye Danxia
  • Qilian Grassland

A complete loop allows you to experience many of the representative landscapes of Northwest China in one trip.

8. Chaka Salt Lake or Emerald Lake — Which Is More Worth Visiting?

The two destinations offer completely different experiences.

Chaka Salt Lake: Ideal for photographing the famous “Mirror of the Sky.”

Emerald Lake: Known for its changing colors and is particularly suitable for aerial and landscape photography.

If your schedule allows, visit both.

Many travelers actually find Emerald Lake more impressive than they expected.

9. Is It Worth Visiting the Mogao Caves?

Yes, especially if this is your first trip to Dunhuang.

Advance reservations are recommended. During the peak season, reservations should be made up to 30 days in advance according to the original itinerary information; otherwise, only emergency tickets may be available.

The Mogao Caves are not simply about the architecture. Their greatest value lies in the millennia-old mural art preserved inside the caves, making them one of the most culturally significant attractions in Northwest China.

10. When Is the Best Time to Visit Mingsha Mountain?

Many people visit around midday, but we recommend entering after 4:00–5:00 p.m. and staying until sunset.

Why?

✔ The sand is less hot
✔ The light is softer
✔ The sunset is particularly beautiful
✔ At night, you may also have the opportunity to enjoy the starry sky and performances, depending on the schedule

If you are interested in evening performances, check with your travel agency in advance to confirm whether they are available during your visit.

11. What Are the Accommodation Conditions Like?

Overall, accommodation in Xining, Dunhuang, and Zhangye is good.

Dachaidan is a small town, and accommodation can become limited during the peak season. According to the original itinerary information, Dachaidan does not accommodate foreign travelers, so travelers holding foreign passports should confirm their accommodation arrangements in advance.

We recommend booking hotels ahead of time rather than waiting until you arrive.

12. What Clothes Should I Bring?

Even in July and August, there can be a significant temperature difference between day and night.

We recommend bringing:

  • Sun-protective clothing
  • A windbreaker
  • A light down jacket if you feel the cold easily
  • A sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

Temperatures may reach the 20°C range during the day, while nighttime temperatures may drop to around 10°C.

13. Will the Sun Be Very Strong?

Yes. Ultraviolet radiation can be very strong in Northwest China, and many travelers get sunburned on their first day.

Be sure to use:

✔ Sunscreen
✔ A hat
✔ Sunglasses
✔ UV-protective sleeves

Don’t assume you can skip sun protection simply because the weather feels cool.

14. Should I Join a Low-Cost Tour for My First Trip?

Don’t choose a tour based on price alone.

Many low-cost tours may involve:

  • Rushed itineraries
  • Short stops
  • Large groups
  • A fast pace

What really affects your travel experience is often not a difference of a few dozen or a few hundred yuan, but whether you have to spend six or seven consecutive hours in a vehicle every day.

For example, some tours may leave around 9:00 a.m. and spend most of the day on the road, arriving at the attraction around 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. If there is traffic congestion, you may not arrive until around 10:00 p.m. In that case, almost the entire day is spent traveling.

If your budget allows, a 2–6 person small-group tour or private customized trip can offer a good balance of comfort, flexibility, and travel experience. This is especially suitable for families, friends, and photography enthusiasts.

15. Who Is the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop Suitable For?

It is particularly suitable for:

✅ First-time visitors to Northwest China
✅ Nature lovers
✅ Photography enthusiasts
✅ Family travelers
✅ Travelers with parents
✅ Overseas Chinese returning to China for a vacation
✅ Travelers who want to experience grasslands, lakes, deserts, Danxia landscapes, snow-capped mountains, the Great Wall, and salt lakes in one trip

If you mainly enjoy city shopping and food-focused travel and have little interest in natural scenery, the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop may not be the most suitable destination for you.

Conclusion: Essential Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop Tips to Know Before Your Trip

The Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop has become one of China’s classic road-trip and private-car routes not simply because it has many attractions, but because within just a few days, you can experience an extraordinary variety of landscapes — lakes, salt lakes, snow-capped mountains, grasslands, Gobi landscapes, deserts, Danxia landforms, and thousands of years of cultural heritage.

However, it is also a long-distance route with attractions spread across a vast area. Instead of trying to check off as many attractions as possible, keeping daily driving times reasonable and allowing enough time to stop and explore can make the entire journey much more comfortable and memorable.
