8-Day Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop Tour | An In-Depth Journey from Xining

Why Is Now a Good Time to Travel the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop?

Have you noticed that more and more friends have been traveling to places such as Dunhuang, Dachaidan Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake?

It is no coincidence. The Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop has become increasingly popular in recent years, while the scenic areas along the route have also become more developed and accessible.

Many travelers want to experience this spectacular region while its natural landscapes are still at their most beautiful. In particular, travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao have quietly added the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop to their travel wish lists.

Think about it: this route crosses Qinghai and Gansu provinces, bringing together highland lakes, mirror-like salt lakes, Yadan landforms, vast deserts and Gobi landscapes, and the colorful Danxia landforms in one journey.

It offers one of the most complete showcases of Northwest China’s diverse landscapes. A single trip can take you through an incredible variety of scenery that feels like a journey across different parts of the world.

For first-time travelers from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan planning a Qinghai-Gansu trip, the biggest challenge is often not whether to go, but how to arrange the route.

The entire loop covers more than 2,700 kilometers, with driving times between attractions often taking 3–5 hours. If the itinerary is not planned carefully, or if you choose the wrong driver or vehicle, the overall travel experience can become exhausting and inconvenient.

There are also many large group tours and shopping-focused tours on the market, which can make some travelers hesitant about joining a group.

In this article, we will introduce VisitCNVoyage’s 8-day in-depth Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop itinerary, including the attractions, accommodation arrangements, and tour details, answering your key questions about traveling the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop.

Best Time to Visit the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop

The Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop is generally recommended from May to September, largely because of the region’s unique terrain and climate.

The route crosses the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Gobi landscapes of the Hexi Corridor, with major changes in elevation. Starting from Xining at around 2,200 meters above sea level, the route climbs toward mountain passes and viewpoints in the Qilian Mountains at elevations approaching 4,000 meters.

The region has a continental highland climate, with significant differences in both daytime and nighttime temperatures as well as between seasons.

During winter, high-altitude sections can experience snow and ice, and some mountain passes may be temporarily closed. Salt-lake attractions such as Chaka Salt Lake and Dachaidan Emerald Lake also require sufficient water levels to create their famous mirror-like reflections.

During drier periods, parts of the lakes may become dry and cracked. As temperatures rise in May, the grasslands begin to turn green and the flowering season begins.

Because of these geographical and climatic conditions, the season you choose can have a major impact on both the scenery and travel comfort. Before planning your trip, it is worth understanding the characteristics of each travel period.

Spring (April–May)

The weather is still relatively cool, but there are fewer visitors. Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake are generally much quieter than during the peak season, making this period suitable for travelers who prefer peaceful surroundings and photography.

However, some high-altitude sections may still be affected by weather conditions. Traveling from mid to late May is generally more stable, as more high-altitude roads are likely to be open and lake water levels begin to rise.

Summer (June–August)

This is the busiest travel period of the year. The grasslands around Qinghai Lake become lush and green, while the vast canola flower fields in Menyuan usually bloom from around July 5 to July 25. This is one of the best periods to experience the classic scenery of the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop. However, it is also the peak tourist season, so it is recommended to plan your travel dates in advance.

Autumn (September–October)

The skies are generally clear, the clouds create beautiful layers, and the autumn colors of the Qilian Mountains gradually become more prominent. The colorful layers of Zhangye Danxia also appear particularly vivid under the autumn sunlight. Visitor numbers are generally lower than during the summer holiday period, making autumn a popular choice among experienced travelers exploring Northwest China. After mid-October, however, road conditions can become less predictable.

Winter (November–March)

Some high-altitude sections may be affected by heavy snowfall and road closures. Most Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop tours do not operate during this period, so winter is generally not recommended for this route.

★ Travel Tip: The destinations along the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop are generally located at elevations of approximately 2,200–3,200 meters above sea level, making this a moderately to high-altitude journey. Most travelers experience only mild fatigue. The itinerary is arranged to gradually increase altitude and allow time for acclimatization. If you feel unwell at any point, please inform your guide immediately.

Detailed 8-Day Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop Itinerary

VisitCNVoyage’s 8-day in-depth Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop tour starts from Xining and follows a clockwise route through Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Dachaidan Emerald Lake, Water Yadan, Dunhuang, Mogao Caves, and Zhangye Danxia, before returning to Xining via the Qilian Mountains and Menyuan Grassland.

It is one of the few in-depth routes currently available that includes several hidden-gem attractions, such as Dachaidan Emerald Lake, Water Yadan, and Heidushan. Below is a day-by-day introduction to the itinerary.

DAY 1 | Arrive in Xining – Your Journey Begins

This is the starting point of the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop and a gentle introduction before beginning your highland journey.

Upon arrival in Xining, your private driver will be waiting at the airport or station exit to pick you up. No matter what time your flight arrives, you can enjoy a smooth transfer and begin your journey without unnecessary worries.

After checking into your hotel, you can easily walk to Mojia Street. There is no need for a long drive on your first evening. Instead, you can freely explore Xining’s local food and enjoy a relaxed start to your trip.

Located at an elevation of around 2,200 meters, Xining has a relatively mild climate and serves as a comfortable transition before entering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. If you have enough time, you can visit Dongguan Mosque to experience the distinctive atmosphere of Northwest China’s Islamic culture.

Alternatively, head to Mojia Street and try local specialties such as hand-pulled lamb, Qinghai Liangpi, and refreshing Qinghai yogurt while getting ready for the high-altitude journey ahead.

DAY 2 | Xining – Qinghai Lake – Chaka Salt Lake

Today marks the official entry into the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Crossing Riyue Mountain represents the geographical transition into the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The mountain was historically an important transportation route and also carries cultural memories of the Silk Road and interaction between different ethnic communities. From the mountain, you can enjoy sweeping views of the grasslands and distant horizons.

Continue along the scenic western route around Qinghai Lake, where deep blue water meets snow-capped mountains in the distance. This is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sections around Qinghai Lake. As you travel along the road, the lake changes from a calm mirror to shimmering blue water, while grazing cattle and sheep add to the peaceful highland scenery.

DAY 3 | Chaka Salt Lake – Deheihe Life Tree Photo Spot – Qarhan Salt Lake

Today is a day surrounded by spectacular salt-lake landscapes.

Known as the “Mirror of the Sky,” Chaka Salt Lake is famous for its white salt crystals and vast reflections. The lake reflects the sky, clouds, and distant mountains, creating a dreamlike scene that can make you feel as though you are walking between heaven and earth. Under clear skies, the blue sky is reflected across the water, creating an incredibly clean and bright landscape. When clouds move across the sky, the scenery takes on a completely different sense of tranquility.

After stopping at the popular Life Tree photo spot, continue to Qarhan Salt Lake, one of China’s largest salt lakes and a remarkable example of inland salt formations. Layers of salt crystals create unique patterns across the surface, while minerals in the water produce shades of emerald green that contrast beautifully with the white salt shores, making the landscape resemble a giant natural canvas.

DAY 4 | Dachaidan – Emerald Lake – U-Shaped Highway – Water Yadan

This is one of the most talked-about hidden-gem days on the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop.

Dachaidan Emerald Lake was originally a series of salt-mining pits left behind by a chemical plant. Rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and lithium, the lake displays beautiful shades of blue, emerald green, and milky turquoise. Travelers often compare it to the “Maldives of China.” The water is remarkably clear, and the salt layers beneath the surface can often be seen. Each section of the lake has its own unique color.

In the late afternoon, the setting sun casts a warm glow across the lake, creating a beautiful contrast with the distant snow-capped mountains. As the angle of the sunlight changes, so does the color of the water. This is one of the most beautiful moments of the day at Emerald Lake, when the landscape seems to transform into a natural display of color.

The U-Shaped Highway is one of the most distinctive road landscapes along the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop. The road winds through vast Gobi and salt-flat landscapes, forming a striking U-shaped curve. With snow-capped mountains, the Gobi, and blue skies stretching into the distance, it is an excellent place for photography and one of the iconic sights along the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop.

Water Yadan is one of the largest and most spectacular Yadan landform areas in the world. It is also widely known as the only known landscape on Earth where Yadan formations rise directly from the water. Millions of years of wind erosion have sculpted layers of earthen hills rising from the desert, while the surrounding water creates a surreal landscape that appears to float between land and sky.

DAY 5 | Dachaidan – Heidushan – Dunhuang Night Market (Shazhou Night Market)

Today offers a striking contrast between vast wilderness and lively local culture.

Heidushan is a lesser-known scenic area located opposite the former Lenghu Oil Base. Its dark mountains blend with the surrounding Gobi to create an almost minimalist ink-painting landscape. Desolate, isolated, and strikingly beautiful, the black-and-white scenery can make you feel as though time itself has stopped along the horizon.

Along the way, pass through the abandoned Lenghu oil town, which developed rapidly in the 1950s because of its oil resources. Once bustling with activity, the town became quiet after oil production stopped. Among the ruins of factories and empty streets, traces of old slogans and buildings remain, silently telling the story of the pioneers who worked here during China’s early development of the oil industry.

Arrive at Dunhuang’s Shazhou Night Market in the evening. Lively without being overwhelming, the market is filled with the aromas of grilled meat, apricot-skin drinks, hand-grabbed rice, and local desserts. This vibrant street life shows that Dunhuang is not only a historic city but also a destination full of warmth and local character.

DAY 6 | Dunhuang – Mogao Caves – Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Moon Spring – Dunhuang

This is a day where spectacular natural scenery and priceless cultural heritage come together.

The golden dunes of Mingsha Mountain rise and fall across the desert, while a crescent-shaped pool of blue water rests quietly among the sands. This desert oasis has survived for thousands of years. When the wind moves across the dunes, the friction of the sand creates a distinctive humming sound, giving the mountain its name, “Mingsha Mountain,” or “Echoing Sand Mountain.” Crescent Moon Spring has remained remarkably preserved in the middle of the desert and has become one of the most fascinating sights along the ancient Silk Road.

The Mogao Caves were first established in AD 366 and are often described as an “Oriental treasure house of art.” The caves contain exquisite murals and painted Buddhist sculptures, representing centuries of artistic development from the Sixteen Kingdoms period through the Yuan Dynasty. They also provide valuable evidence of cultural exchange along the Silk Road. Exploring the caves with a professional guide is more than sightseeing—it is a cultural journey across more than a thousand years of history.

If you would like to experience the desert more deeply, optional activities can be added at your own expense, including camel riding, desert off-road vehicles, or a sunset experience among the dunes.

The Mogao Caves operate on a real-name reservation system, and tickets can be extremely difficult to secure during the peak season. Some travelers miss out because they cannot obtain tickets in time. Our Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop tour provides ticket reservation assistance, with a dedicated team helping to secure your admission. You do not need to compete for tickets on the official website or worry about missing this important attraction. Simply provide the required identification information and enjoy your visit with peace of mind.

DAY 7 | Dunhuang – Son of the Earth – Zhangye Danxia – Zhangye

Today is where modern art and ancient history meet in the middle of the Gobi.

Standing quietly in the desert, the giant sculpture “Son of the Earth” features the face of a child and symbolizes the connection between people and nature. Against the vast Gobi landscape, the sculpture creates a dramatic contrast with the sky and surrounding wilderness, producing a peaceful yet powerful visual experience.

This is the most colorful day of the Qinghai-Gansu journey. Layer upon layer of Danxia landforms appear in vivid shades of orange-red, golden yellow, and ochre under the sunlight. Often described as “a palette overturned by God,” these landscapes were shaped by millions of years of geological change and erosion. The resulting mountain textures and layers of color create a spectacular final highlight for the Qinghai-Gansu journey.

Zhangye Danxia Scenic Area is located in a remote region, with strong sunlight and long walking paths. After spending much of the day outdoors, many tours traditionally place travelers in ordinary local business hotels. We have specifically arranged accommodation at Hampton by Hilton Zhangye, providing the comfort and facilities of an international hotel brand so that you can properly relax and recover after exploring the Danxia landscape.

★ Travel Tip: Zhangye Danxia Scenic Area is extensive, and visitors generally travel between viewpoints by shuttle bus. There are many walking paths and steps, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. The sunlight can be strong and there is very little shade, so be sure to use sun protection and drink enough water.

DAY 8 | Zhangye – Qilian Grassland – Menyuan – View of Gangshika Snow Peak – Xining Airport Transfer

This is one of the most relaxing and scenic sections of the journey on the way back to Xining.

Colorful prayer flag towers stand across the grasslands, with five-colored prayer flags radiating outward from tall poles. Local people believe that as the wind moves the prayer flags, blessings and prayers are carried into the distance. Looking up at the colorful prayer flags against the highland landscape creates one of the most beautiful scenes where local faith and nature come together.

Daban Mountain Viewing Platform is one of the most spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Qilian Mountains. From the platform, the Haomen River Valley stretches for miles below, while the snow-covered Gangshika Peak shines in the distance. The expansive views can be breathtaking, and the area is particularly known for its sunrise, sea of clouds, and dramatic mountain peaks.

If you visit between July 5 and July 25, more than 600,000 mu of canola flowers in Menyuan bloom across the landscape. The golden fields stretch from the Haomen River Valley toward the horizon, creating a magnificent highland landscape framed by snow-capped mountains.

Finally, you will be transferred to Xining Airport according to your flight schedule, bringing this journey across the plateau and desert to an end.

Over eight days, you will experience the vast landscapes of Qinghai Lake, the golden sunsets of the Dunhuang desert, and the vibrant colors of Zhangye Danxia. Every destination becomes a memorable part of your journey through Northwest China.
