After completing the entire Qinggan Grand Loop, I finally understood why reviews of this route can be so mixed. The experience can vary depending on the season, weather, and personal preferences. Here are some of my honest impressions for anyone planning a trip to Qinghai and Gansu.

Emerald Lake | An Unexpected Highlight

Emerald Lake was one of the biggest surprises of the trip. The lake changes between different shades of blue and green depending on the sunlight and viewing angle. On a clear day, the water looks incredibly clear and contrasts beautifully with the surrounding desert landscape.

I did not have very high expectations before visiting, but after arriving, I found it well worth spending some time here.

Water Yadan | A Unique Northwestern Landscape

Water Yadan is quite different from the other attractions along the route. The combination of the lake and unusual Yadan landforms creates a vast and remote atmosphere.

If you enjoy natural landscapes and less conventional attractions, this is definitely a place worth visiting.

During summer, there can be quite a few mosquitoes, so bringing insect repellent and wearing long trousers is recommended.

Highway 315 | The Scenery Along the Way

One of the most memorable parts of my Qinggan Grand Loop trip was not necessarily a particular attraction, but the scenery along Highway 315.

The landscape constantly changes between vast deserts, salt lakes, barren plains, and distant mountains. Although there are some long drives, there is always something different to see along the way.

In many ways, these changing landscapes are what make traveling through Northwest China so special.

Chaka Salt Lake | Don’t Expect the Same as the Photos

The actual experience at Chaka Salt Lake can depend greatly on the weather and the number of visitors. On a sunny day with fewer tourists, the reflections on the lake can be beautiful. On cloudy days or during busy periods, however, the scenery may look quite different from the carefully edited photos online.

It is better not to focus too much on getting the perfect “Mirror of the Sky” photo. Relax, enjoy the landscape, and you may find the experience more rewarding.

My Qinggan Grand Loop Tour Experience

I chose to travel the entire Qinggan Grand Loop with a tour group, and overall, I found it quite convenient.

The route is long, and many attractions are far apart. Planning everything independently would require quite a lot of time to arrange transportation, accommodation, and daily itineraries.

For first-time visitors who don’t want to spend too much time planning the route themselves, a well-organized Qinggan Grand Loop tour can make the trip much easier. The itinerary is arranged in advance, so you can simply follow the daily schedule and enjoy several of the region’s most impressive landscapes.

Of course, if you prefer complete freedom and flexibility, traveling independently or renting a car may be a better option.

Overall Impression

After completing the Qinggan Grand Loop, I feel that the real appeal of this route goes beyond its famous attractions.

Emerald Lake, the unique landforms of Water Yadan, the vast scenery along Highway 315, as well as the salt lakes, mountains, and deserts along the way, all became part of the experience.

If you enjoy natural landscapes in Northwest China but don’t want to spend too much time planning the route yourself, I would consider a well-organized Qinggan Grand Loop tour a convenient option.

Sometimes, the beauty of Northwest China isn’t found at a specific attraction. It is the unexpected scenery outside the window as you travel from one place to the next.
