Xinjiang Travel Review | My Tour Booking Experience & Lessons Learned

阿Ken
After traveling independently in Xinjiang, I really came to understand that there is a lot to be careful about when choosing a tour in China!
Before the trip, I spent a lot of time researching online and contacting different travel agencies. The price differences were huge, ranging from just over RMB 2,000 to RMB 7,000–8,000. At first, I came across some extremely cheap tours, but after doing more research, I found that many of them were shopping tours or rushed itineraries with very little time for sightseeing.
Luckily, I didn’t book one without checking the details first. 😭
Here is a simple record of my beautiful Xinjiang trip, along with some tips I put together before booking a tour. Hopefully, it will be useful for anyone planning a trip to Xinjiang.
✨ My Experience with a Small-Group Xinjiang Tour
I had previously joined a cheap long-distance group tour, where most of the time was spent sitting on a bus or visiting shopping stores. There was very little time to actually enjoy the attractions, so the overall experience was quite average.
This time, I chose a small-group Xinjiang tour focused entirely on sightseeing, and the difference in pace and overall experience was huge.
1. Sightseeing Only with No Extra Charges
The contract clearly stated what was included. There were no shopping stops, no mandatory optional activities, and no hidden charges.
Entrance tickets to the attractions and local meals were included, so we didn’t have to keep paying extra during the trip.
Xinjiang has a large temperature difference between day and night, as well as strong UV exposure. Our guide was also very thoughtful and prepared useful items such as sunscreen, warm jackets, and wet wipes in the vehicle.
The small details made the journey much more comfortable.
2. A Small Group Makes Long-Distance Travel Much More Comfortable
Xinjiang is enormous, and many attractions are very far apart, so large bus tours can be tiring.
Our group had only six people, and we traveled in a comfortable business vehicle throughout the trip. There was plenty of space, and we didn’t feel crowded.
Each day focused on the key attractions rather than trying to visit too many places. We didn’t have to leave extremely early every morning for long drives, and there was enough time to take photos, relax, and enjoy the grasslands and lakes at our own pace.
When we watched the sunset at Sayram Lake and experienced the sea of clouds over the grasslands, our guide also shared some smartphone photography tips. It was surprisingly easy to capture beautiful landscape photos.
⚠️ My Tips for Avoiding Tour-Booking Pitfalls
These are simply the things I learned from comparing prices, reading countless travel reviews, and doing my own research before the trip. I’m sharing them as a reference for anyone planning to visit Xinjiang.
✅ Don’t Trust Extremely Cheap Tours Too Quickly
Xinjiang is vast, and transportation costs can be high. If a tour is unusually cheap while claiming to cover all the major attractions in Northern Xinjiang, it is worth checking the details carefully.
Some low-cost tours may rely on shopping stops as part of their business model or pack too many attractions into a short itinerary. This can mean spending long hours on the road every day while having very little time to actually enjoy the destinations.
By the end of the trip, you may feel exhausted.
✅ Read the Contract Carefully
Before booking, make sure the contract clearly states whether there are no shopping stops and no hidden charges.
It is also important to check the travel agency’s registration and legal operating status in Xinjiang, so that you can avoid booking through an unclear or unverified tour provider.
✅ Ask About Deposit Refund Policies in Advance
Make sure you understand the cancellation and refund policy before making a booking.
Some travel agencies may offer flexible cancellation arrangements, while others may require full payment immediately or have strict cancellation conditions.
If the payment and cancellation terms are unclear or inflexible, I would personally consider other options first.
✅ Pay Through the Company’s Official Account
Ideally, the company name on your contract should match the name of the account receiving your payment.
For a long-distance trip involving a relatively large amount of money, it is better to avoid making personal transfers whenever possible. Keeping the payment records consistent with the contracted company can also make things easier to handle if any problems arise later.
💡 Highlights from My Xinjiang Trip
📍 Sayram Lake
People call Sayram Lake “the last tear of the Atlantic,” and after seeing it in person, I understand why.
The lake water was incredibly clear, with a deep blue color that felt very calming.
Our guide took us away from the busiest areas and showed us quieter lakeside paths where we could walk slowly and enjoy the enormous landscape up close. It was incredibly relaxing.
📍 Duku Highway & Nalati Grassland
This is one of the classic routes to experience in Xinjiang!
The scenery changes dramatically along the way, from mountain forests and grasslands to deep valleys. The vast landscapes of Nalati Grassland were especially impressive, with endless green scenery stretching across the horizon.
It was the kind of place where you could simply walk, take photos, and slowly enjoy the magnificent landscapes of Northern Xinjiang.
📍 Kazanqi Folk Village
This colorful village has a distinctive atmosphere, with blue walls and brightly colored doors and windows that look incredibly photogenic.
There is also a strong local cultural atmosphere. Our guide introduced us briefly to the local Uyghur culture, while allowing us enough free time to wander through the small streets and take photos without rushing from one attraction to another.
It was a great way to experience the cultural side of Xinjiang.
My Personal Thoughts
Xinjiang is truly huge and incredibly beautiful. In my opinion, it is much better suited to slow-paced, in-depth travel than a rushed sightseeing itinerary.
If you don’t want to spend a huge amount of time researching attractions, planning extremely long transportation routes, and arranging hotels and restaurants yourself, a small sightseeing-focused group tour can make the trip much easier.
You can simply focus on enjoying the scenery and making the most of your journey.
This is simply a record of my own travel experience, shared as a reference for anyone planning a trip to Xinjiang!
